FINALLY got round to publishing this thing: it lets you generate a custom zipfile containing whatever Form Tools components you want – modules, themes, API and Core. Right now it’s pretty basic and doesn’t track dependencies between the various components, but I’ll be adding that soon. Mostly I’ve been using it just to cut down on installation time – having to manually download component after component. This solution is much more elegant!

    Why not to use @importApril 10, 2009
Filed under: Tech News @ 12:30 pm

Here’s a very interesting article posted yesterday by Steve Souders on his blog, which outlines a disadvantage of using @import over standard the link tag. See here:
    http://www.stevesouders.com/blog/2009/04/09/dont-use-import/

The crux of the article is that @import results in stylesheets being downloaded sequentially rather than in parallel, resulting in slower load times. It covers a variety of cases; multiple @imports, @imports + link tags, and more.

The article is entirely about IE, saying that the problem exists on version 6, 7 and 8. The conclusion is that standard link tags work consistently over all browsers and should be used instead.

    New job!April 6, 2009
Filed under: Life @ 6:15 pm

I’ve just been offered the position of Senior Web Developer at Central 1 Credit Union, right here in Vancouver. Fantastic! As much as I enjoy working from home I’d been getting increasingly antsy over the last few months and very much needed a change. A good friend strongly recommended the company and I was fortunate enough to find a role available which suited my skill set extremely well. So, as of April 20th I’ll officially be a Working Stiff again. Can’t bloody wait. Being a contractor was supposed to be temporary…

This means, of course, that I’m going to have to pare back my open source work and stop taking on new projects. Frankly, I’m rather happy about it – the volume of emails I’ve been receiving for the RSV libraries, Smart Lists, Flash Image Scroller – and others – are getting rather burdensome. I hate leaving emails unanswered but there’s only so many hours in the day. What I’m going to do is set those projects up on Google Code with an open invitation for other developers to take them over.

I will continue to support Form Tools 2, but it’ll be relegated to evenings and weekends.

    What a good day.

One of my favourite modern composers is giving a talk at 2pm today at the Cascade Room on Main St. It looks like a preliminary to a series of concerts held by “Music on Main” in the coming days, to celebrate his work.

    Awesomeness.
