Google Maps: Coloured Markers — January 14, 2007
Google provides some default reddish icons for their Google Maps app, but no other colours besides those. This proved to be rather a nuisance, since a client requested precisely this for their site (Probono Maps).
So… 260 images manually created later, I’m done. What a PAIN! So for anyone else needing this, click here to download the files. The zipfile contains all A-Z .png’s in the 10 colours seen below, as well as a .psd if you need to change them from A-Z to 1-100 or whatever. Hope it comes in useful!

Very useful, thanks a lot! I can’t believe you did them all by hand, there must have been an easier way…
Comment by Deebster — January 24, 2007 @ 2:25 pm
Thanks for sharing, appreciate your time and effort
Comment by Son Nguyen — March 3, 2007 @ 8:36 am
Thanks for all your effort….been-there-done-that! Your colors and font are SO CLEAR compared to others.
The .psd file would not open in my PSP…I know i am too cheap…it usually does open them but there must be vectoring in your markers…yah?
If I can’t get it i’ll make my own in PSP : 1.) what font and font size did you use?
Again thanks…you saved me tons of time.
Kent
Comment by kent — March 12, 2007 @ 11:11 am
No worries, Kent! Pity you can’t open the files – not sure why, though… I don’t *think* it’s using any vectors… but maybe I am, who knows (the intracies of photoshop still bewilder me to this day).
The font is just Arial, size 13 with the “Strong” option.
All the best –
Ben
Comment by ben.keen — March 12, 2007 @ 11:21 am
Thanks for sharing! I think I’ll take advantage of the extra sets of colors if I need more than 26 markers … so maybe start off with A-Z in red for the first 26 markers, then go to A-Z in blue for the next 26 markers, etc.
Comment by Another Ben — March 28, 2007 @ 6:58 pm
Wow, thanks, I just put them to use on my new site http://802.11maps.com/

Thanks so much! I was surfing around mapki looking for a quick way to make a gray marker, but all the apps out there for marker generation create really low quality pixilated images. I just opened your psd and replaced the red with gray – beautiful and clear! You saved me mucho time.

Hey, thanks for this. Though I went a step further and saved PNGs of the letters and PNGs of the blank backgrounds. Now I only have 36 images instead of 260+. I just do this:
Then I position the div where I need it :) Great work with this, it saved me LOADS of time! :)
Comment by Curt — April 25, 2008 @ 11:45 am
darn! html tags were taken out… a simple view, not real html in any case :)
[div id=pin_a]

Sorry, but all icons are scretch in the width.
So I think the icon must all be 32×32 and not 22×32.

Nice. Do you have all of them in a grid as a single PNG image. Like the picture on this page. I would make a script that uses that as a sprite. Google Maps Api supports two dimensional sprites now.

Brilliant icons, but I can’t do anything with the PSD file: Irfan View, which as you know can do anything, just shows it as a single image even though it’s a half megabyte file: what’s the secret please?
Comment by pendle — September 27, 2009 @ 5:04 am
Thanks for your work. However, when I print the Google maps marked with your icons, they don’t appear correctly but are all red with a black star inside… Do you know where the problem come from ? I have tested printing with IE and Mozilla.

I recomand you something like that..
http://ovimihai.110mb.com/src/img/place2.php?p=A2&c=3
you can generate any 3 leter+number combination..
with a small modify you can generate the actual files…

Hey, great job. just unizipped into a folder /shared/img/markers and changed this line in my JS.
letteredIcon.image = “/shared/img/markers/Blue_marker” + letter + “.png”;
Brilliant work and thank for donating something for the greater good. Me too, cannot understand why Google had not done that – they can do it for static maps …
